Summary:

S. 359 by Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) provides an amnesty for illegal aliens engaged in farm work and their spouses and children. The bill also vastly expands and liberalizes the H-2A agricultural guestworker program.

Status: 2/10/2005: Referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

FAIR comment: OPPOSE: This amnesty for illegal aliens engaged in agriculture is open-ended and is structured such that fraud in the application process will likely be even more rampant than was the case in the Special Agricultural Worker amnesty that was enacted as part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA). Nothing in this bill will prevent agribusiness interests from hiring new illegal aliens to replace those amnestied under this bill.
