Background: The new fiscal year began on October 1, but with no budget deal in sight, the federal government effectively shut down, threatening critical VA benefits and services for our veterans. Moreover, with the continuing effects of mandatory sequestration, the Department of Defense still faces dangerous cuts that will impact our military personnel, readiness, training, and family Quality of Life programs.
It is essential that Congress reach a budget deal, stop the shutdown, end the irresponsible policy of sequestration, and pass legislation to ensure this can never happen again. VFW is urging all of its members and advocates to contact their legislators and demand action by passing a responsible FY 2014 budget for VA and Department of Defense, as well as advance appropriations legislation for all VA accounts to ensure this can never happen again.
Action Needed: Email your legislators today and tell them the current government shutdown hurts our veterans, and an uncertain budget impacts military readiness, hurts troops and their families, and puts our national security at risk. Remind Congress that only they can end this impasse by passing a responsible FY 2014 budget that will provide for our service members, veterans and their loved ones. Time is already up, and Congress must work to end this dangerous stalemate for our military and our veterans.
