As they focus on tax reform, the new Congress has the opportunity to ensure no American is taxed into poverty by supporting bipartisan proposals to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC and Child Tax Credit (CTC) kept 9.2 million Americans out of poverty in 2015. House Speaker Ryan and President Obama have proposed to expand the EITC for low-wage workers who don’t claim dependents. This would benefit 13.5 million Americans, including 1.5 million non-custodial parents, lift 500,000 hardworking Americans out of poverty, and reduce the depth of poverty for another 10.1 million.
Let's build on this bipartisan momentum to expand the EITC!
