In the book of Isaiah, the prophet declares,
“They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Isaiah 2:1 & 4, NRSV, emphasis added).
The United States is reluctant to give up its swords and spears. And again, we are on the brink of war. Tensions between the United States and Iran have dramatically increased due to the United States’ withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and its fallout. While some government leaders are actively pushing the United States and Iran closer to war, faith leaders from a multitude of denominations and faith-based organizations have spoken out in protest. They have declared that a war with Iran would be “an unmitigated disaster, morally and religiously indefensible.” Although President Trump asserted that a war with Iran would neither “last very long” nor involve ground troops, faith leaders disagree saying that any kind of conflict could potentially evolve into a larger, more costly conflict. These leaders have said that there is no such thing as a quick and painless war, and a war with Iran “would likely have disastrous human and environmental consequences.”
Urgent action is needed today to prevent war with Iran. Ask your Member of Congress to cosponsor and support the Khanna/Gaetz Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act to ensure effective diplomacy and prevent war with Iran before it begins.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) - PC(USA) - stands in opposition to war with Iran, favoring peace and diplomacy. During the 223rd General Assembly (2018), the PC(USA) reaffirmed the church’s commitment “to seek peace and reconciliation among peoples and to support the work of governments to these ends.” Consequently, PC(USA) declared the church is opposed to “efforts to increase hostilities with Iran” and urged the U.S. Congress to fulfill its responsibility to “hold the administration accountable for faithful execution of the laws related to nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, […] so that the U.S. may be a reliable partner to its allies and an upholder of international law.” Moreover, PC(USA) calls for all Presbyterians “to continue to support peace and reconciliation efforts, and to include the people of Iran, as well as our mission partners, in their prayer, study, and witness.”
Urgent action is needed today to call Congress to cosponsor and vote for the Khanna/Gaetz Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. This amendment is sponsored by Representatives Ro Khanna (CA-17, D) and Matt Gaetz (FL-01, R) and would ensure that the president cannot take military action against Iran without prior congressional authorization. This amendment buttresses Article I of the Constitution of the United States which requires the president to obtain authorization from Congress before engaging in war.
