Action Alert
Take Action DREAM Act NOW!
Dreamers are Not a Bargaining Chip, Call Now

We cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. (Deuteronomy 26:7)

You shall not oppress a resident immigrant; you know the heart of an immigrant, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. (Exodus 23:9)

Everyday, 122 immigrant youth will lose their protection from deportation. Deportation can mean the grief of family separation, grave economic instability for mixed status households, and in some cases, being deported to a country when they don’t speak the language and have never lived. Congressional leaders have been kicking the can down the road to pass a spending bill to keep the government running and have been using 800,000 Dreamers as a bargaining chip in those negotiations. A legislative fix in the form of the Dream Act could assist even more individuals than those who are DACA recipients. We need them to hear our message loud and clear: Any spending bill that does not include the Dream Act, is a vote for the deportation and endangerment of immigrant youth. We need Congress to step up and pass a clean Dream Act!

The 220th General Assembly (2012) clearly stated that all governing bodies of the church should “actively [advocate] for legislation such as the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) that offers hope for young immigrants by providing a pathway to citizenship” (Minutes, 2012, Part I, p. 1140, electronic version).

Stated Clerk Rev. Dr. J Herbert Nelson II has emphasized support for undocumented people and Dreamers repeatedly, most recently in a letter to the President saying, “We have heard the clamor of voices in the Dreamers movement. They have not stood by and idled, waiting for change to happen for them. These individuals understand what it means to be an active citizen practicing their own agency, and have long fought for their rights. They are examples of democracy at its core and what the U.S.A. holds dear.”

Sample Script to Representative/Senators: “I’m your constituent from [City, State]. I support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and strongly oppose President’s Trump’s announcement to end it. DACA has provided nearly 800,000 immigrant youth the opportunity to work, raise a family, and pursue their dreams. I urge you to support a clean passage of the Dream Act of 2017 (S.1615/H.R.3440) and do everything in your power to protect immigrant youth.”
