Action Alert
In a major victory for independent-college students, the Ohio House Finance Committee has just voted to fully restore funding for the Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) at the level originally proposed by Gov. Kasich: $41 million per year.

The committee's approval of a pair of amendments reversed the drastic cut to a maximum of $13.35 million per year that would have occurred under the original House budget released late last Thursday. The vote sets the stage for almost certain passage at that level in the House tomorrow or Thursday.

Independent-college students and families owe a great deal of thanks to Rep. Randy Gardner, chairman of the House Finance Subcommittee on Higher Education, and to their institution's presidents and trustees. Rep. Gardner worked tirelessly over the last four days to restore full funding. In addition, presidents and trustees made numerous targeted calls to key representatives and House leadership, which rapidly brought the issue to the top of agenda for legislators.
