Action Alert
Take Action Continue 7-Day Fill Bill Momentum by Writing Letters Today!
NACDS RxIMPACT is calling on YOU to help build support for legislation limiting initial opioid prescriptions that was introduced just weeks after NACDS RxIMPACT Day on Capitol Hill event activities where over one thousand advocates urged Congress to support important opioid abuse policies with hundreds of Capitol Hill meetings and nearly 1,000 letters.

The John S. McCain Opioid Addiction Prevention Act (H.R. 1614/ S. 724) -- by Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Cory Gardner (R-CO) in the Senate and Representatives John Katko (R-NY) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY) in the House -- establish 7-day supply limits for initial opioid prescriptions written for acute pain. NACDS RxIMPACT needs your help telling your Senators and Representatives how important it is to support this legislation!

If you have not seen the opinion piece in the well-known Washington publication The Hill about this legislation, please take a moment and review important insights by NACDS President & CEO Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE.

Specifically, this legislation would limit initial opioid prescriptions for acute pain to no more than a 7-day supply; if pain continues, the prescriber may issue a new prescription to continue therapy as appropriate. It also accommodates appropriate exemptions to limits for prescriptions issued for chronic pain, pain being treated as a part of cancer care, hospice, or other end-of-life care, pain being treated as part of palliative care practices, and prescriptions issued for medications used to treat opioid addiction. The bill ensures that pharmacies are not required to enforce practitioner prescribing limits, which are the responsibility of prescribers to comply with.
