Action Alert
Take Action E-Verify Will Expire Unless Senate Takes Action
Tell your Senator to bring H.R. 6633 to a Vote Immediately!
UPDATE 9.29.08.  A temporary extention of the E-Verify program was included in the Continuing Resolution (H.R. 2638) which is on its way to the President's desk.  The CR will facilitate continued funding for the program through March 6, 2009.  Congress is still in session, so there is still a chance that they could quickly pass H.R. 6633 (the Employee Verification Amendment Act of 2008), the bill which would fully reauthorize E-Verify for the next 5 years.  Please continue to call your Senators and urge them to bring H.R. 6633 to the floor for a vote before they go home for the Election recess!

E-Verify is a voluntary web-based program to help U.S. businesses abide by long-standing immigration law requiring that they employ only legal aliens and U.S. citizens. The program is easy, inexpensive and effective and has strong bi-partisan support. However, unless Senators act now, this valuable program will sunset on November 29, 2008.

H.R. 6633, introduced in the House by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), authorizes funding for E-Verify for five more years. After passing the House by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 407 to 2, the bill moved to the Senate where Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) has put a "hold" on it. If the hold is not released, or voted down by 61 senators, or if the House version of E-Verify isn't "hotlined" and passed on the Senate floor, E-Verify will disappear.

Urge your Senators to bring H.R. 6633 to a vote for the following reasons:

E-Verify is Accurate: As of the first half of 2007, E-Verify has been proven 99.5 percent accurate.

E-Verify is fast and easy for employers to use.

States support E-Verify: 11 states require use of E-Verify in certain circumstances (Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and Utah), one encourages use (Tennessee), and one limits use (Illinois).
E-verify is coming close to solving the 20-year-old problem of finding an easy, sustainable way for businesses to verify worker eligibility. We cannot forfeit this progress!

The Senate is set to adjourn at the end of this week until after the election. If E-Verify is not reauthorized this week, the system will be forced to shut down the first of November. Please flood your Senators with calls and emails urging them to immediately bring to a vote and support H.R. 6633!
