The Department of Health and Human Services has proposed a rule that support the clear intent of Congress to protect the conscience rights of doctors, nurses and other health-care workers in facilities that receive federal funding. I support this rule because it is consistent with our nation’s time-honored commitment to respect the moral beliefs of both health-care workers and taxpayers.
Specifically, the rule assures that health-care facilities receiving federal funding would guarantee that they would not penalize employees who decline on moral grounds to participate in abortions, sterilizations or other procedures.
Even though Congress has annually upheld the conscience rights of these workers consistently for the past 35 years, the rules are needed to counter ill-advised pressure from Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates to deny these rights.
As a member of the Center for Moral Clarity, a national Christian grassroots organization, I realize that the proposed rules are a positive step for religious liberties, and I encourage you not to interfere with their implementation.
Thank you for considering my opinion.
