As a member of the Center for Moral Clarity, a Christian grassroots organization, I supported the Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act of 2006. It was common-sense legislation that greatly reduced the number of Americans involved online sports gambling. Two bills now before the Congress threaten the progress made by that law, and I urge you to oppose them.
Both H.R. 2607, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act, and H.R. 2046, an Internet gambling legalization bill, would have the effect of giving the government’s blessing to online sports gambling. These bills would have the effect of threatening the actual and perceived integrity of athletic contests, and send a dangerous signal to young people that wagering on sporting events is OK, because it has the government’s blessing.
Gambling can only raise revenue for the government if it is promoted as a socially constructive activity – and it is not.
Gambling destroys lives, and the government shouldn’t become a party to it. Please use your influence to defeat both of these ill-advised bills.
Thank you for considering my opinion.
