On October 20, 2009, the Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act was introduced in both the House and the Senate. The two bills would put federal muscle and money behind the Chesapeake Bay section of the federal Clean Water Act.
Help convince your members of Congress that they must amend the Clean Water Act to clean up our rivers and the Bay. We must stem the tide of pollution.
We need all of our Congressional delegation from the six Bay states and the District of Columbia to:
- Immediately co-sponsor these two important bills;
- Work to pass these bills with strong accountability, clear deadlines, enforceable penalties, and additional funds to reduce pollution.
Here's how you can help:
- Meet directly with your federal Senators and your Congressperson and tell them you support this legislation.
- Make a phone call urging your federal representatives to support HR 3852/S 1816.
- Handwrite a letter urging your federal representatives to update the Clean Water Act.
- Take action in your community.

Points to make when speaking with or writing to your representatives:
If they are already a co-sponsor, thank them for supporting clean water in our rivers, streams, and the Chesapeake Bay and ask them to continue their strong support for HR 3852 or S 1816.
If they are not yet a co-sponsor, urge them to support the most important bill for clean water the Chesapeake region has seen in decades and co-sponsor HR 3852 or S 1816.
Tell them something about what clean water means to you and that this bill is extremely important and needs their support. They need to hear from you that you care about having clean water and want them to care, too.
