Take Action Tell Senate to Pass Legislation Addressing the Opioid Epidemic by Labor Day
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 63,600 Americans died of a drug overdose in 2016 — a staggering 21 percent increase from 2015. With 174 Americans dying daily from a drug overdose, the nation’s drug epidemic remains an urgent public health crisis requiring a comprehensive response that includes investments in prevention, treatment, overdose reversal, and recovery supports, as well as law enforcement and criminal justice reform.

Throughout the year, the Practice Organization and APA have advocated for legislation that would address the nation’s growing opioid epidemic. Although Congress has yet to provide new services funding at levels commensurate with the unmet need for substance use treatment, it is considering a wide variety of policy and program changes aimed at addressing this public health crisis.

On June 22nd, the House of Representatives passed the “SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act,” broad, bipartisan legislation that would improve access to care for individuals with substance use disorders, increase services and care coordination among providers, and promote the use of non-addictive interventions for the treatment and management of chronic pain.

While Senate committees have approved bills similar to those passed in the House, time is running out for the 115th Congress to pass legislation to address the opioid crisis. We need your help to tell the Senate to pass its version of opioid legislation soon, so that the House and Senate can resolve differences between their bills in time to enact legislation later this year.

Please join us in calling on the Senate to pass comprehensive legislation addressing the opioid crisis before Labor Day.
